Blog's Birthday

Tomorrow, 28 March 2007 at 6:37 AM Eastern Time, this site will reach its first anniversary.

It's been a rocky year, with massive computer crashes, personal sorrows and disasters, and the tragedy in Oh Ji Ho's life.

There have been devestating natural events, and nasty political ones.

Through all of it, you have been steadfast. I want to tell you how appreciated you are.

VERY!

Thank you all for making it worthwhile. I've come so close to closing this site at times, but when I think it over, I'm glad I didn't.

Oh Ji Ho - Back in Korea

Whoops, did I get caught with an unforgivable typo? Sorry.

Okay. I see some of you have been coming back repeatedly, waiting for words. Melville, N.Y., we are in the same time zone, thanks for coming so faithfully. I see you've been dropping by. And thank you Las Vegas. Hawaii too. You guys are the best.

Oh Ji Ho has been in Japan on "vacation" (rest trip I would say). I learned of it this morning after tracking down a translation of an online article in a Korean news search page. Whew! Finally a small break in the Great Wall of Silence.

That isn't all I have to tell you.

Someone I am acquainted with from Hawaii is now either enroute to, or has arrived in, Korea for a visit. It is possible she will be able to gather good information about Oh Ji Ho, as to his health etc.

It is also NOT impossible that she would be able to speak with him personally by phone. I don't know. I do know if it were me, I would break down doors to see him with my own eyes to be sure he looked okay; not the way he looked last spring. But then, I'm a maniac.

Joshing aside, I am focused on only one Korean actor. This one. She heads a club dedicated to Korean dramas. There are many people her members like, and no one actor is discriminated against, or favored above others. They're all welcome to visit when in Hawaii, and they'll all be welcomed with open hearts.

Oh Ji Ho's return to Korea does not mean he will be back in the thick of things. That is something we will have to wait and see about.

He still needs the visible proof of our friendship and support. His birthday is 14 April. Birthday cards would be very nice. The more countries that are heard from, the better he will feel about his fan base. He needs us.

Now...the International Oh Ji Ho Fan Club is open to take applications for membership. The first members signed up will be made happy by receiving free membership for a full year. The annual dues are low. They are $15.00 USD. Not bad, right?

You can place an applicaton by clicking on the link to the right that tells you to.

Simple.

Right?

I don't hear you.

Right?

Ah, that's better.

So, that's it for the moment.

I send you all, my heartfelt affection,
Hyacinth

So..what are you waiting for? Go sign up. Hurry. 30 freebies will go soon. Some are already gone.

Good Morning,

It is still morning here, at any rate. My StatCounter here is leaping. You are coming here for information. I understand why.

I w1ll post some data after 1:00 PM US Eastern Daylight Saving Time (UDT).

Is there a volunteer among you who will do some translating for me so English speaking viewers can read things that are popping up in news posts?

I hope so. I will be grateful.

Hyacinth

Oh Ji Ho - A small bit of news.

Dear viewers,

I've gotten word through a few proxies that our letters and cards have indeed reached Mr. Oh safely, and that he has expressed his surprise and appreciation for the support he has received from all of you, from all the corners of the world.

From Dubai to Dublin, from Jakarta to Jerusalem, from New York to The Netherlands, Japan to Jamaica, Cairo to California, you have come out to cheer him on.

Allow me to take a liberty I would not ordinarily take, that of speaking for another, to say on his behalf, thank you.

I myself thank each and every one of you. You are the jewels in the crown of this effort. Without you, nothing happens here.

You are my energy, and you are the source of the passion that keeps me burning bright, even when I’m too tired to see.

Some of you have sent me in the direction of photos, some of you have written touching things that went straight to my heart, many of which have found their way to the front page here. For these efforts, I thank you.

At this time I still urge you not to let up in sending cards, or simply worded little notes, that will continue to show your support.

When it gets to the point where it’s a little bit boring…that’s the critical moment.

Just think of yourself as representing 100 people that feel the same as you, who all stop visibly supporting Mr. Oh at the same time.

Think of the gap that leaves in the mailbox, then pick up your pen, and scribble a line, just saying, “Hello Zio, how are you today?” Or, whatever you would ordinarily say.

For this, I thank you.

Always,
Hyacinth

Here's a little laugh.

And a big one.

Just when I think I can't go on much longer,

something like this comes along. Two people left comments on the same subject, and I really needed them.

Here's what they said, and also, what I said to them.

Mailyn said...
"Hello there, I am one of the mentally unstable people who, thank god, hasn't decided to end their lives.

I agree with you 120%.

NOBODY should be held accountable or responsible for a SUICIDE. It's absurd. It's something the person did in a very low moment when they most certainly were not thinking straight. That cannot be blamed on absolutely anyone. TONS of people break up, get dumped and lots worse things [rape, murder] happen everyday to millions around the world yet not all decide to end their lives no matter how sad or bad things are.

If anyone else out there thinks otherwise they must be crazier than I am.

My heart goes out to the poor family and the very sad woman who thought that was the best way.

My sympathy also goes to Oh Ji Ho because I also believe that people should have the right to work and that shouldn't be taken away for something they have no control over.

I follow TONS of artists from all over the world but Asia [esp Korea] is by far the worse when it comes to handling "scandals" since they seem to break more careers than anywhere else where things tend to blow over soon enough and the person is back in action.

Coincidentaly out of those countries I follow celebrities of [Greece, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, India, Thailand, China, Taiwan, England, and a few more] seems to me they also have the record for more suicides amongst young celebs nowadays.

It's just a sad state of things.

LOVE your blog. Am linking it now!

Oh and fuck anyone who thinks it's cool to call you names and shit because you are exrecising your RIGHT to defend whoever the hell you want."

My response:
Dear Mailyn,
Your comment is a huge dose of anti depressant; I can’t thank you enough for it.

I am a strong proponent of free speech, but there are times when that free speech becomes an assumed right to go on the attack.

I have to admit I’m guilty of doing it myself on occasion, but I rarely get as personal as I did with the party I addressed in the letter to Invisible Commenter. In truth, I could have been brutal to a fault, but can’t drop to that level here out of respect for all the people who come to this site regularly. They don’t need to hear the harangue.

Your comment which supports my piece on loyalty to a cause, is filled with clarity of thinking, and also with a whole lot of savvy as to the state of affairs I am addressing these days.

The ham fisted fashion with which Mr. Oh is being handled is appalling beyond reason. The Korean style seems to be execute first, and ask questions later, if at all.

Any agency with a set of cojones, and loyalty to the consumer; in this case, Mr. Oh, would do all they could to keep their customer satisfied. They’d do all they could to squelch the bad press, they’d do all they could to crank up the efforts to slap vicious netcretins where it would hurt the most, in the pocket, by supporting any effort existing to catch these b****rds, and see that they get fined up the kazoo for harassment.

But then, I’m talking about cojones here…what a waste of my time, since I seem to be one of the very few with a set, and I’m a female.

Never let it be said that I accused his agency of having cojones.

So thank you again for the time you took, and thank you again for the moral-support, and thank you for the link too.

Warmest regards,
Hyacinth

Tho' I'm not sure exactly what the "Invisible Commentator" said... doesn't really matter. This entire post... very well said! Thanks!

Hi Anonymous,

I appreciate your support here more than I can say.

I want to take this opportunity to mention I am very well aware that not all Anonymous comenters are bad guys.

I have only one regret about the comment that was posted. I failed to keep the original text of it. I was under the impression it would be in my e-mail, but the setting for comments I was using here at the time it was made, were not geared to forward the entire text to me.

Damn, damn, a thousand times damn.

However, I more or less paraphrased what the person wrote.

I was accused of thinking that (may be slightly misquoting here) ‘…your precious Oh Ji Ho is a perfect angel…’ etc.

You’re intelligent. You can get the jist of what it said from my response.

In appreciation of your appreciation, thanks again,
Hyacinth

Oh Ji Ho - An Evolution of Loyalty

I want to express my attitude here on the individuals who spend unrealistic numbers of hours on the internet spreading hatred.

They do it on the basis of race. They do it on the basis of religion. They do it on the basis of social standing. They do it on the basis of financial success, or lack of it. They do it on the basis of gender, sexual preferences, physical appearance, nationality…you name it, there is always someone who will hate you for it. That’s just the way it is.

This site, in English, was started for the purpose of bringing Oh Ji Ho to the attention of the western world. While he was well known in his own country, a relatively small number of people were aware of him in western countries.

There's always been a nucleus of individuals who were followers of “foreign” entertainments and cultures. They are a small group per capita in terms of an entire population, and often specialized in their pursuits. For example, persons who are interested in Japanese literature, or film, may have no interest in British or Russian efforts.

In this day of mass communication, the narrow focus becomes broadened. When I lived in New York, I went to a theater that specialized in foreign film. There were certain countries whose works bored me, and others that I loved. I tended to spend my time only on that which had become familiar and dependable. I missed out on a lot of very excellent work because of it.

Today, I love Asian movies. Korea has turned out some fine works, many done by independents, over the years. But I love pre 1997 Hong Kong movies more than I can say. And now I’m gearing myself to start checking out Taiwan works.

Are you seeing what happens? Because a means of easy discovery has become so readily available to me, I can explore the whole world. Something triggered it for me.

In putting this site up, my intention was to trigger awareness. It was that simple.

But the event that catapulted him into the spotlight was not his rise to fame as an entertainer in his own country, and the fallout because of the attention of K-Drama fans all over the world, it was because of one specific very prejudicial sounding article that broke the news about the suicide of a woman linked to him.

Later it was discovered that he had not been truthful at first, about his relationship with her. It was then that the netcretin crowd went wild, smelling blood like the sharks they are, and the feeding frenzy was on.

I have reached a certain point in my thinking about the entire situation. I do not care if Oh Ji Ho didn’t tell all immediately. I do not care if he callously “dumped” a woman because he got more famous suddenly. If someone commits suicide because of a break-up in a relationship, it has more to do with an unstable mental state, and a lack of self esteem and confidence, than it does the break-up.

I don’t care if he is not a nice man. I don’t care if he has warts on his rear end.

I do care that someone has had his means of livelihood taken away from him in his own country, because of his private life.

And if you wonder why I care, it’s this: He is not a head of state, he’s not a priest, he’s not a serial killer, he’s not a lunatic poisoning the water supply, he’s not a fanatic flying planes into buildings.

He’s just an actor. He’s not important anywhere in this world for any reason larger than that he is an entertainer.

Oh Ji Ho doesn’t hold the lives of millions in his hands as do heads of state that declare wars, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people. He’s just a person who wants to work as an actor.

Every human being in the world has the right to work at what they want to work at without being judged and denied employment on the basis of his or her personal life.

There have been remarks made about me that I am an overzealous fan. That’s as insulting as telling me I’m fat.

I am defending this man’s right to work in his chosen field. In doing so, I am calling attention to a condition that is all too common in Korea where celebrities are concerned. I am, by proxy, defending the workers of an industry. It didn’t start out that way, but that’s what it has evolved into.

If I come out swinging a baseball bat at the heads of netcretins, I consider my self to be leveling the playing field. The achievement of balance is a beautiful thing.

Dear anonymous commenter,

I guess you're what we'd call a neitzen. Well, let me ammend that. Nice people would call you a netizen, what I'd call you I won't put up here out of respect for my readers.

You say that you have first hand information that Mr.Oh is a liar, that he's lied a couple of times. Hmmm. But I notice you don't nave a name, you have no relaible source to quote, and you seem to be someone who could really use the advice, "get a life". Get off the web, go see a shrink. You're a warped individual who could really use some help before your bowels get into such a twist, you'll never be able to relieve yourself again. You'll drown in your own feces.

See the advantage of moderated comments? AND, I even have a record of every isp number that enters this site.

Oh Ji Ho - The Invisible Man…

Or just a man gone to ground? That is a question that rises in my mind as I watch the deadly silence in Korean news searches.

I have never gone on the hunt and come up empty in the past. Suddenly, for seven days, there is absolutely nothing new.

In the past, if he flossed his teeth, some reporter was telling the world about it, and posting a photo along with the big breaking piece of news that, yes, Oh Ji Ho did indeed floss his teeth, but also, it was known that he did so on a daily basis.

There’s more talk about dead people in the news than there is about the living in this case. So, what gives?

Voluntary blackout, or obliteration by the mean and nasty powers that be, who tremble in their well polished shoes at the thought of pickle faced ajumma disapproval? Tsk, tsk.

Oh Ji Ho has a blog that has been attributed to him. It’s been cleared out of most content, but this remains.

Why that and not this?

Or this?

Or, what about this very lonely picture?

Kind of gets to you, doesn't it? Click to enlarge.

Oh, gee, I almost forgot. Some statistics. Don’t run away. This isn’t boring.

From January 21, 2007 to February 22, 2007 there were 133,288 hits on the counter of that blog. Now, was that boring?

If you're ambitious enough, you can check the figures yourself. Be my guest. Click right here.

Who is eradicating Oh Ji Ho?

We could ask Star Empire Entertainment of Seoul Korea. They are his representatives. Surely they have some kind of answer. After all, he has been paying them for their services. And very good services they are too. No, I cannot complain about the quality of service he has received from them in the past.

He certainly has shown more confidence in himself, he seems to be more at ease in front of an audience, he sings, he moves around with the music…nice.

Star Empire Entertainment did that for him. A new improved Oh Ji Ho. What a shame it would be to discover that like God, Star Empire Entertainment giveth, and, like God, Star Empire Entertainment taketh away.

Oh, tell me it isn’t so. Care to rise to that challenge S.E.E.? Do it. I’ll publish your statement in English, AND just because I’m one of the good guys with the white hat, I’ll put it up in Korean too. How’s that?

Now, ladies and gentlemen, listen to the long silence. You can almost hear a pin drop, can’t you?

Oh Ji Ho - Men's Health Magazine

A grateful tip of the hat to Matthew Kim for turning me on to this issue of Men's Health Magazine Korea containing an article and these photos.

Since these things are planned and worked on months in advance of publication , I don't want to say that he's working again at this time. On the other hand, his haircut implies this photo shoot was fairly recent. I sure hope so.

Oh Ji Ho - Lunar New Year

Dear Zio,
Your friends from all over the world wish you a good New Year.

We hope you will resmue working soon because we all miss you very much.

Please eat. Please sleep. Please stay healthy. Please be peaceful.

And not the least of our wishes, please believe in us as friends, as we believe in you.

Oh Ji Ho Objectified

Oh Ji Ho is a prime example of objectification. His face, which is his fortune on one hand, becomes a liability on the other. It is thought by some, that were he less attractive to women, he would garner roles of a more varied nature. His last vehicle produced in Korea, Couple of Fantasy, clearly displays his capacity for comedy, a thing that has been demonstrated time and time again.

His capacity for portraying sadness, even desperation, has been amply demonstrated in the movie La Belle, and in A Second Proposal, a basically comedic role that evolves into one of a far more serious nature, and shows another side of him entirely when he discovers to his surprise that he loves a woman who does not return his feelings. His performance was heartbreaking.

Unfortunately though, when a very handsome man might pull an otherwise sluggish plot across the finish line, he's often the one. He has name recognition among women as a sexy looking drama idol, and acts as an audience magnet, which is unfair to him, and does nothing to further his reputation as a good solid actor. He's had some poor direction in the past. The audience tends to put the blame for that squarely on the shoulders of the actor. All they take away from viewing a bad piece of work, is his indelible physical image in their minds. He becomes an object.

Recently, the American actor Leonardo DiCaprio complained in an article about having been objectified as a result of his role in the film Titanic.

I quote here from that article of January 23, 2007
(Original source: Newsweek)

“Leonardo DiCaprio wanted to give up acting for a time after the hit movie "Titanic." DiCaprio was back to being considered "another piece of cute meat" after the 1997 film's spectacular box office success, an image he had wanted to get away from after his days on the cover of teen magazines, he tells Newsweek in this week's edition.”

‘"It was pretty disheartening to be objectified like that. I wanted to stop acting for a little bit,"’ he said at the magazine's Oscar panel discussion with other actors. ‘"It changed my life in a lot of ways, but at the same time, I can't say that it didn't give me opportunities. It made me, for the first time, in control of my career."’ But after many successful movies and critical acclaim, DiCaprio said he loves acting.

‘"There's no other art form in the world that affects me more. There's nothing that I walk away from feeling transformed by, the way I do with cinema,"’ he said.”

Oh Ji Ho is not as famous as DiCaprio, but they have shared a similar phenomenon in both having been objectified.

DiCaprio, who is only two years older than Oh Ji Ho, but a thousand miles farther ahead in his career, is no longer an object, no longer a teen idol. He has outlived that phase, and is now seen as person of stature.

But Oh Ji Ho, at the age if thirty is still, “another piece of cute meat” and worse than that, he’s ever more objectified. He is a Sex God, A Hunk, Gorgeous, Hottt, Hawttt, and even described tastelessly as “meat” at one unnamed site.

He has become the object of a sex fantasies, and his humanity has taken a back-seat to desire, to lascivious fascination, to wishful thinking. Even more than DiCaprio ever was, Oh Ji Ho has become an object without a mind, without a soul, without sorrow, without longing, without loyalties, without a tired back after long hard days, or burning eyes after being fried under the stage lighting, having troubled sleep because there isn’t enough of it, feeling hunger or cold, having worries, responsibilities, family obligations… Do I really need to go on?

It wearies this writer to see all the shallow perceptions across the screen as they pop out time and time again. The depersonalized object, like a doll, a toy there only for a moment of amusement, of titillation, and left behind until the next time he comes up somewhere.

This is a human being. First, last and always, he is a human being. He has embraced acting, it is what he wants, and maybe, needs to do. There are some people who have a fire within themselves that brings them to a place in life they love. DiCaprio says, “There's no other art form in the world that affects me more. There's nothing that I walk away from feeling transformed by, the way I do with cinema…"

It’s hard to imagine that Oh Ji Ho feels any less fulfilled than Leonardo DiCaprio, when his own work is done, and he has completed a project that lasted days, weeks, or months.

When he retires to the privacy of his home, what exists that says he doesn’t celebrate in his mind, in his soul; the joy afforded him by doing this labor he loves? And who is to say that he does not reflect on his good fortune to be a part of this; to be an actor, or entertainer on whatever screen or stage he happens to be occupying at that time?

Only the objectifiers, who never look beyond a face, never look beyond a body, never see the whole person they rob of identity, every time they refuse to see a complete human being.

It might be asked how they would feel to be looked at as only breasts, or hips, or thighs, as impersonally as one would look at chicken parts in a grocery store, while assessing their edibility. Like meat.

NOTE
Oh Ji Ho's situation has not changed in just a few days (see commentary below). His career is in jeopardy, he is also dealing with the loss of his companion, and with the gossip and ugliness certain types enjoy spreading via the Internet.

Family of Man

If you have read the post titled Off Topic, you will know I have recently had terrible news of a friend who was killed. After this news, I was very angry and filled with bitterness. I wanted to beat the world with my fists.

I thought about this. I thought about Michael, my friend. He was a good man, and I never heard him say anything bad about anyone.

I had written a poem filled with sorrow, dedicated to him.

Then, without any plan I began to think about Oh Ji Ho, a Korean, about Rivi, from Sri Lanka, about Ara, a Basque friend, about Alexey, a Russian, about Jackie, a black woman (now), but a young girl when she was my best friend in Junior High School in Newark, New Jersey. All the people I have loved, Edgar, Gillian, Carlos, Lorna, Monica, Jacques…all different people with different beliefs and different colors, different national origins.

And I wrote this poem to heal myself. To remind myself that we are a family.

Litany Three

Almond eyes
Skin of ivory
River of hair
Taste of a woman
Taste of a man
Scent of heat
Curve of an arch

How beautiful
How beautiful

Eyes of earth
Black silk hair
Mahogany skin
Curve of the cheek
Voice of a bell
Voice of a gong
Scent of passion

How beautiful
How beautiful

Eyes of blue water
Hair of golden coils
Skin of snow
Dimpled elbow
Rose lips
Curve of the hip
The call of doves

How beautiful
How beautiful

Crinkled hair
Black sky skin
Eyes of night
Flashing smile
Full lips kissing
Feet of a dancer
The length of thigh

How beautiful
How beautiful

How beautiful you are

I wish to dedicate this poem to you, the ones who come here from all over the world. I dedicate it to the friends of Oh Ji Ho, our brother, who is troubled these days. We are all touching each other. We are family. We are humanity.

I bow before you in humble gratitude for your honored presence. Thank you.

A Letter to Zio

Dear Oh Ji Ho Shi,

No one can fully understand what you are going through right now. Yet, we who care about you as an actor and as a human being are sympathetic and worried about your well-being.

Personally, I feel deep sorrow that your beloved friend was so trapped in what must have felt like a hopeless position. I wish her life on earth could have been happier. I do think that for her, you were a bright beam of joy. Someone who experiences love is very fortunate. She was fortunate to have loved and been loved…no matter how brief. That she felt compelled to end her life is tragic…but it was her choice, alone. Do not allow yourself to sink into guilt and depression.

I know that God loves her and has made a place for her in heaven.

For you, do what you do best…be focused, strive for joy and happiness, rely on your quiet humble strength and take deep breaths. Remember, the acute pain and sensationalism will pass. I pray that what does remain is the memory of love that allows you to love again.

May the God of your understanding hold you in blessings and light.

C. Chun

Off Topic

I am tired. My mind is dulled, and my eyes burn. Too many events have taken place in my life in the last eight weeks, and circuit overload is the result.

Though this is personal business, and perhaps not best mentioned here, I will anyway. As I tried to keep you informed during the computer crashes, when I wasn’t able to post, or only post in a very limited way, I’m keeping you informed now.

Very briefly: Late in the autumn I developed a problem with one of my feet. It is a condition I can do nothing about. It is extremely painful, but it does settle down for reasonable periods of time. It’s never completely gone, but I can live with it.

In early December a very strong wind storm passed through the region where I live. It was in fact associated with a tornado. We were very lucky that we were not in the direct path of this terrible storm which resulted in fatalities, and caused extreme damage where it touched down.

My home sustained damage from the winds. It was one of only two, in this immediate vicinity damaged. The insurance was not enough to cover the repairs, but anything is helpful.

In mid December I discovered that a friend had been murdered some time ago. I learned of it through the Internet…through news articles. There was no phone call to tell me of it, no softening of the story, just words printed across the screen like iced water being poured over me.

This past week, I had a flood in my home.

I had to call the fire department to come out to shut the water off, and while I waited for them, the water was blasting out of a pipe, soaking the floors. They are damaged to the point where they must be replaced, and they present a threat to me if I absentmindedly walk on a soft spot.

For a while now, the situation with Oh Ji Ho, and my recognition of the potential far reaching effect it could have, has dominated most of my waking hours while trying to encourage people to take a moment to send a card or note that will demonstrate we are behind this man. We don’t want to see him lose what he has worked so hard to achieve.

I am not the only person engaged in that activity; I suspect there are cards and letters addressed to him coming in from all over the globe.

That’s good.

I am so far behind in personal correspondence, I keep sending notes promising letters that don’t get written, or that are half written. It presses on my mind.

The upshot here is that I will only be posting photographs for a while. Of course if anything major develops, I will be here to let you know.

Some say, “No news is good news”. Probably more true than not. In this case though, there are many of us who have that bad feeling…and want to hear something or other.

UPDATE 1/31/07:I am now monitoring all comments. This simply means that I will be notified that a new comment has been added. I will then read it to be sure I am filtering out machine generated spam, or comments that are detrimental to myself or Oh Ji Ho, since this is not an open forum. It is a privately published blog.

I am reopening access to my e-mail address for the purpose of handling inquiries regarding contacting Oh Ji Ho. It is absolutely essential that we not stop sending cards or short notes of encouragement to him. He will need us for a good while. He has been through a nightmare.

You will not have to deal with the dread blue letters in order to comment or ask for the address. I hate that thing, and I can't stand inflicting it upon you good people. Monitoring the comments makes it unnecessary.

Right this minute I am seeing double images. I really need to get some rest.

Sit tight, stay healthy, and keep the faith.

Yours,
Hyacinth

I call this picture, "He sleeps..." I hope he does.
